APA Style Citation Examples: Media

Figures (Graphs, Charts, Maps, Drawings, Photographs)

  • Figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals
  • Figure title should be brief, but descriptive of the content of the figure. For example, Figure IX. Population of Maryville, MO by gender (2014).
  • Mention the figure within the text
  • Obtain written permission for print/electronic reuse and give proper credit in the figure capation:
    • Journal: From "Title of Article," by A. N. Author and C. O. Author, year, Title of Journal, Volume, p. xx. Copyright [year] by the Name of Copyright Holder. Reprinted [or Adapted] with permission.
    • Book: From Title of Book (p. xxx), by A. N. Author and C. O. Author, year, Place of Publication: Publisher. Copyright [year] by the Name of Copyright Holder. Reprinted [or Adapted] with permission.
    • Web: From "Title of Web Document," by A. N. Author and C. O. Author, year (http://URL). Copyright [year] by Name of Copyright Holder. Reprinted [or Adapted] with permission.
  • Disclose substantive modifications to photographic images
